In late 2007, a health-conscious friend of mine told me about green tea, saying that for the past year, she had substituted the beverage for her daily cup of morning coffee, and that she consumed 5 to 6 cups of green tea every day. She touted its health benefits, and suggested that I give it a try myself. Being a confirmed coffee drinker, I thanked her, but told her that I could not imagine substituting my multiple cups of morning “Joe” for a mug of green tea, a beverage that I imagined ill suited for a busy, middle-aged executive like myself on a hectic corporate schedule who needed a firm jolt of caffeine to get going in the morning.
My friend had little success converting me to her ways at first, but when she left for Europe the next summer, she delivered to me her collection of green teas and suggested that I give them a try. For weeks, the teas sat in my kitchen pantry untouched, while I worked day and night on a floundering project. During the course of this project, I worked regularly until after midnight, sleeping only for a few hours before beginning again mid-morning. One afternoon, after a particularly stressful day, I decided to prepare a cup of my friend’s tea, instead of my usual late-day double espresso. At this point, it would be beneficial for me to say that magical results took place and my project suddenly took flight, my stress was eliminated and I went on to great fortune and success. Unfortunately, none of the aforementioned took place, but an interest in my friend’s beverage of choice had taken root and as the days went by, I found myself gradually drinking more and more green tea.
Over time, and I mean months not weeks, I discovered that I had lost weight, although I had not made a conscious attempt to diet, and I had achieved an overall a general sense of well-being and calm that I had not had before. Furthermore, and I attribute this directly to green tea, I discovered that I was sleeping better at night, and I felt more clear-headed during the day. One day, I called my friend in London to tell her that the tea that she had left for me was gone, and that I had ordered more. She told me that she had had a similar experience with green tea and we made plans to get together to compare our “green tea” notes when she returned to the United States.
By the time she returned to the States, green tea had become as much a part of my daily routine as my pre-dawn morning run. As time went on, I discovered many other green tea products, such as green tea extracts, green tea diet teas, and potent green powdered tea that people were using to achieve enhanced energy levels, increased vitality and all around good health by boosting their immune system and protecting themselves from disease.
